Salute to Jam 88.3 for job well done!!!

During the September 26 typhoon Ondoy, Jam 88.3FM did something nobody else did...They stayed on air, canceling all their scheduled programs to report the latest on the flooding situation as well as the intensity of our state of calamity.

It started on Saturday at 4PM with DJ's Lambert as well as RockEd's Gang Badoy. Gang had felt that something needed to be done and right she was, many things actually needed to be done and the help they were able to provide proved to be useful in countless ways to countless people. As a matter of fact, due to the power failure's in various parts of Manila, most people were only able to gather information and the current status through their FM stations on their mobile phones and Jam 88.3 was the only station that spent all their time reporting these updates. Knowing that the help they were providing was useful, they stayed the night and were onboard all the way through to the next day...and the day after that, Monday.

By Monday, Jam had arranged for bands in the local music industry, both major labels as well as independent, to come in to the studio to play a few songs for the listeners as well as to tell their stories of how the typhoon affected them and their loved ones and friends. Not to mention the useful information everyone was able to provide in terms of learning which roads were now passable and which were still underwater.

DJ's Lambert, Gang, Steph, Migs Torres, Tracy as well as those who couldn't be at the studio stayed sharp in reporting any information they were able to gather and confirm and reported these details live on air. Meanwhile, they were also shuffling about and coordinating all the donations which were coming through the hall and into their studio, all while sorting out the schedule of the 31 bands that had confirmed to make an appearance and play on the show.

Some of those that came to play included The Bernadette's, Mayonnaise, Turbo Goth, The Camerawalls, The Ambassadors, Noel Cabangon, The Dawn, Kjwan, Julie of Julianne, Zach Lucero, Imago, Hannah of Session Road, Peryodiko, Playphonics, and Ernville. Kindly take note that this list is not complete. Other appearances were made by Kevin Roy of Razorback as well as Jeffrey Hidalgo.

Donations were also made by Zach Lucero, Lily Stars, Kerwin, Deekaye, Chino, Alex, Ian, Antonette, Niles of Angulo, Cholo of Ernville, Thom, Clayt, Jazz and Lloyd.

The stories that these guys shared were equally mind blowing! Zach lost his Mastering Studio which was in the basement of his home in Paranaque, Vin Dancel actually saved Abe the drummer of Peryodiko, Kelley of Kjwan was at home but the first floor of his house was flooded and he had to move his car to higher ground and had to walk in chest high waters, Gabby Alipe or Urbandub lost a portion of his ceiling but thankfully not the roof, and many others suffered many of their own troubles in this massive disaster.

OdysseyLive.Net would like to acknowledge Jam 88.3 for being angels over the airwaves over this trying time. With their help, they've been able to gather over 6oo water bottles, foods of all kinds, clothing, and continue providing us with current updates as to the conditions of the various area's of the country. Our deepest thanks to you guys, to say it was a job well done would be an understatement

Tropical Storm Ketsana triggered the worst flooding in decades in the capital Manila and nearby provinces.

Defence Secretary Gilbert Teodoro said troops, police and civilian volunteers had rescued more than 4,000 people - many clinging to each other on roofs.

More than 250,000 have been driven from their homes, officials say.

Military chief Gen Victor Ibrado flew by helicopter over suburbs of Manila on Sunday to see for himself drenched survivors marooned on top of half-submerged buses and on rooftops.

TV footage showed some survivors clinging to high-voltage power lines.

Correspondents say the rescue effort is intensifying as the weather cleared on Sunday.

But some reports estimate that 80% of the capital is still under water.

The government has declared a "calamity" in Manila and 25 provinces, allowing access to emergency funds.

Latest confirmed figures say that 73 people are dead and at least 23 others are missing.

One report puts the number of dead and missing at 106.

Manila bus driver George Andrada said he had lost everything in the floods.

"It happened very fast. All of a sudden everything was under water. I was not able to save anything except the shirt I am wearing," he said.

Lovely Lansang in Marikina, near Manila, says: "I am currently seeking refuge in a shopping centre. Many people are stuck either on their roofs or in the second storey of their houses.

"The city is also without clean water and electricity. Right now, I am still in the shopping centre because the roads here are impassable,".

The equivalent of a whole month's rain fell in six hours as Ketsana, also known as Ondoy, lashed the northern island of Luzon.

On Saturday, TV images showed gushing water turning roads into rivers, with floods chest-deep and rising.

Appeal for calm

Philippines President Gloria Arroyo appealed for donations and called for calm.

"I am calling on our countrymen, especially residents of metro Manila and other provinces in the path of the typhoon, to please stay calm, follow the instructions of local officials and civil defence authorities," she said in a TV message on Saturday.

Also on Saturday, Mayor Mon Ilagan of the town of Cainta, in Rizal province east of Manila, told local media his town was "almost 100% under water".

Rizal Governor Casimiro Ynares was quoted by local media as saying other towns were completely inundated.

Roads leading into Manila were rendered impassable by stalled vehicles, and some ferry services were cancelled.

The Philippines chief weather forecaster has blamed climate change for the downpours that saw 40cm (16in) of rain fall on Manila in a single day.

Thousands of passengers were stranded as international and domestic airports were shut down.

Ketsana, with winds of up to 100km/h, is expected to head out over the South China Sea on Sunday and Monday.
